Decreased Risk of Strokes in Children with Ventricular Assist Devices Within ACTION

Published on March 5, 2022, Decreased Risk of Strokes in Children with Ventricular Assist Devices Within ACTION focused on characterizing strokes in children with ventricular assist devices. This review included 407 patients in the ACTION registry between April 1, 2018 to May 3, 2021. Of those, 45 experienced 52 strokes. The author’s assessment of the strokes revealed that most of the strokes are diagnosed in the early post-implant period and small children and those with congenital heart disease appear to be at higher risk. The decreased risk of stroke on VAD in the ACTION registry is likely attributable to the combination of the collaborative learning network and the stroke prevention quality improvement. This work has led to the development of a transparent, network wide, multi-disciplinary, in-depth review of individual stroke events to share experiences, identify root causes, and brainstorm possible interventions.
