Cardio-Oncology Introduction

September is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, and ACTION is excited to announce the launch of our newest initiative: Cardio-Oncology!

This initiative will focus on supporting individuals whose cancer treatments may affect their hearts.

Our first resource, created in partnership with the International Cardio-Oncology Society (IC-OS), is a Cardiotoxicity & Cancer informational handout designed for patients and families.

This easy-to-read guide explains:

  • What cardiotoxicity is and how it relates to cancer treatments
  • When heart damage may occur
  • Ways doctors check for cardiotoxicity
  • Dexrazoxane as a possible preventative therapy

Disclaimer: The ACTION network is focused on quality improvement efforts such as harmonizing best practice protocols, disseminating them among institutions, and helping centers to improve care practices at the local level. This protocol was developed as a consensus tool for pediatric VAD programs. The information in the protocols are based on center practices, individual opinions, experiences, and, where available, published literature. Centers may choose to adapt this protocol to include in their center-specific protocols with reference to ACTION with the understanding that these are meant as guidelines and not standard of care.
