Placement of a ventricular assist device (VAD) improves outcomes in children with advanced heart failure, but adverse events remain important consequences. Preoperative mechanical ventilation (MV) increases mortality, but it is unknown what impact prolonged postoperative MV has.
Abstract We report the largest pediatric multicenter experience with Impella pump use and peripheral veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) support. Ventricular assist devices (VADs) have been increasingly implanted in pediatric patients. Paracorporeal VADs are generally chosen when intracorporeal continuous (IC) devices are too large. Superiority between IC and paracorporeal pulsatile (PP) devices remains unclear in smaller pediatric patients. Our study analyzes outcomes of IC and PP VADs in pediatric patients who could be considered for either of these options.

We wrapped 2023 with the launch of several exciting projects, such as the HeartMate 3TM Discharge Bundle and Heart Healthy Video Series, we continued access to the Berlin Heart Active Driver under the extended trial, and we published new ACTION research. Looking ahead this year we have been meeting individually with all ACTION sites to ensure successful engagement in ACTION and highlight membership benefits for each center. We are excited to expand quality improvement, education, research, and best practice initiatives across the network, as well as engage with Global centers and increase advocacy efforts in the pediatric heart failure space.
